APRIL: A REMINDER TO STAY FOCUSED ON THE ROAD

April serves as Distracted Driver Awareness Month, highlighting the critical need for truck drivers to maintain unwavering focus while on the road. Shockingly, distracted driving claims an average of 3,500 lives annually in the United States alone, making it imperative for those in the trucking logistics industry to prioritize safety.

The primary culprits contributing to these tragic incidents include texting, talking, and social media engagement while operating a vehicle. However, there are numerous other distractions that can divert a driver’s attention:

  • Adjusting the radio
  • Reaching for items within the cabin
  • Utilizing GPS devices
  • Applying makeup
  • Observing scenery or billboards
  • Consuming food and beverages

To mitigate these distractions, truck drivers must adhere to several essential practices:

  • Pull Over and Park: When the need arises to send a text or make a call, drivers should prioritize safety by pulling over to a designated area and parking the vehicle before engaging with their phone.
  • Keep Your Phone Out of Reach: Preventing access to mobile devices while driving can significantly reduce the temptation to scroll or text, thus minimizing distractions on the road.
  • Spread Awareness: Encouraging fellow drivers within the trucking community to remain vigilant and avoid distractions is paramount for promoting a culture of safety on the highways.

PROTECTING YOUR CDL: UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS

Maintaining a clean driving record is vital for commercial drivers, as certain violations can lead to the loss of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). These violations fall into four primary categories:

  • Major Offenses: These include serious infractions such as driving under the influence or leaving the scene of an accident.
  • Serious Traffic Violations: Violations such as driving without a CDL or disregarding laws regarding texting while driving can result in severe penalties.
  • Out-of-Service Orders: Disregarding orders restricting a vehicle’s operation poses significant risks and can lead to serious consequences.
  • Railroad-Highway Grade Crossing Offenses: Neglecting safety regulations at railroad crossings endangers both drivers and railway personnel.

The penalties for major offenses can be severe, with first convictions resulting in a disqualification period of one year and subsequent convictions leading to a lifetime disqualification from driving commercially.

Similarly, serious traffic violations carry significant penalties, with multiple convictions within a three-year period potentially resulting in disqualification periods of up to 120 days.

CARGO SAFETY: A PRIORITY ON THE ROAD

Ensuring the proper securement of cargo is another critical aspect of safe driving within the trucking logistics industry. Neglecting this responsibility can lead to serious violations and, more importantly, endanger lives. Common cargo securement violations include leaking cargo, insufficient tiedowns, and loose or unfastened cargo.

While the number of citations for cargo violations may appear low compared to other offenses, the risks they pose are substantial. It’s essential for truck drivers to familiarize themselves with relevant regulations and prioritize cargo safety to prevent accidents and uphold the well-being of all road users.
