FIRE PREVENTION

Vehicle fires are unexpected and can be life-threatening, making it crucial to be prepared for such emergencies. Mechanical issues are often the root cause of these fires, including damage or excessive wear to the exhaust system, short circuits in unprotected areas, low tire pressure, fluid leakage, and excessive hub heat from bad bearings or brake issues.

To minimize the risk of a vehicle fire, focus on key areas prone to incidents:the cab/engine, tires/brakes, and cargo. Keep the cab clean, free of trash, and regularly inspect the engine compartment. Wipe away spilled fluids, remove rags, and ensure all fluid caps are securely closed. Perform routine checks on wiring, the electrical system, fuses, battery, and exhaust system. When refueling, turn off the engine, check for fuel leakage, and avoid smoking or using lighters.

Prevent tire fires by promptly changing soft or flat tires to avoid overheating. Regularly inspect brakes to prevent overheating, release all brakes fully before moving, and refrain from riding the brakes to prevent fire in brake lines. Use your vehicle mirrors to watch for smoke emerging from the cargo area.

YOUR CARGO

When it comes to cargo, take proactive steps to ensure safety. Inspect the loaded cargo for rust, damage, or any other issues before leaving the shipper. Don’t assume the cargo is in perfect condition; verify it against your bill of lading. If you notice damage or discrepancies, involve a supervisor and document the issues. If permitted, take pictures for reference. Communicate the situation to your dispatcher.

Upon reaching the consignee, share the supervisor’s notes regarding the cargo condition. If there are concerns about the material or missing items, direct them to the shipper. Protect yourself by documenting everything and informing your dispatcher promptly. In case of disputes, having a supervisor’s sign-off and supporting evidence can be crucial in proving your diligence and preventing blame for the condition or missing items.

By adopting these preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of vehicle fires and ensure a safer journey on the road.
