IFTA

The International Fuel Tax Association works within the 48 contiguous United States and Canadian provinces to collect fuel taxes for qualifying motor vehicles.

The full schedule of rates can be found here, and you can consult your member jurisdiction for more information regarding filing repots, payments, and ordering decals.

If you rarely leave your member jurisdiction, inquire about using trip permits to cross state/province lines.

Permits

Cities, counties, and states have regulations about the size/weight of loads traveling through their jurisdiction. When planning a load, be sure to make sure you have the proper permits, warning devices, and escort vehicles where needed.

States can vary drastically on return times, so inquire early for jurisdictions you are unfamiliar with. Read all documents carefully before leaving to ensure you are aware of proper speed limits and any leeway given to make fuel/rest stops (some may require these to be listed on the permit).

UCR

The Unified Carrier Registration system registers and collects annual fees from motor carriers who are involved in interstate travel. You can learn more about this system and how to sign up for it here.

HUT 2290

Form 2290, the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return (HUT 2290), needs to be paid every year. For more information and to access the forms you will need to fill out, please visit this page from the IRS.

Application Tips

Down arrow in a circle

The following tips will help expedite application processing:

  1. Use your full, legal name. Using a nickname or shortened form of your name when applying slows down the process.
  2. Make sure your SSN is entered correctly. Transposed numbers or typos can cause required reports to come back with incomplete data and can halt processing.
  3. Have your CDL available. Your license number is required for reports, especially your PSP report, which shows the carrier how many CSA points you have.
  4. Have details and reports ready about any accidents or license suspensions in the last 3 years. If accidents show up on your PSP or MVR, the carrier may ask for a copy of the report to review. Having that available when you apply will improve processing time.
  5. Ten years of work history is required. Be sure to:
    1. Put the carrier’s full name, not just an abbreviation. This is the name that will go on your releases. Some carriers won’t return a verification if it doesn’t have their full name.
    2. Enter at least a city and a state if you don’t know the full address. Many motor carriers have the same or similar names and we can do a search if we have enough information.
    3. Enter your reason for leaving, as required by the DOT. A short answer is fine (you don’t need to provide the full circumstances).

FAQ

Down arrow in a circle

Is there a sign-on bonus or orientation pay?

  • No, we do our best to have competitive rates and offer benefits/programs that last through all of employment/lease.

How much will I make?

  • All loads are paid by rates agreed upon by the carrier and mills and are almost always by weight. This means that exact payment amount will differ by load, and by how many loads are done per settlement period. We can give you an estimate based on other drivers who do the lanes and quantity you plan on doing, but we can’t provide a guaranteed amount.

When will I get paid?

  • Loads delivered by end of day Sunday will be settled on Friday as long as complete, legible paperwork is turned in by noon CST Tuesdays.

Can I do a lease-purchase?

  • We do offer a lease-purchase option after approximately 6–12 months. We will evaluate driver revenue to ensure the resources are constant for the driver and discuss available equipment, down payment, and terms. This is done with the company that owns the equipment, also a part of the Rediehs family.
