IMPORTANT REMINDER: ROADCHECK INSPECTION – MAY 14-16

As we gear up for the upcoming Roadcheck inspection happening from May 14th to 16th, it’s crucial to be prepared. Here’s a rundown of what to expect during this rigorous inspection period for those in the trucking logistics industry.

First and foremost, upon inspection, they will promptly check for chocked wheels and examine the gladhands. Subsequently, a thorough search within the cab will be conducted to detect any presence of drugs or alcohol. It’s imperative to note that even if these substances are unopened while you’re on-duty, you can still incur a violation. Over the past year, approximately 5,000 violations have been issued for various infractions in this regard.

Regarding prescription medication, it’s permissible if it’s part of your prescribed regimen. However, certain medications may necessitate a doctor’s note to confirm their non-interference with your ability to operate a vehicle.

Inspectors will cross-reference the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse to ascertain if you’re prohibited from driving due to a positive test. Additionally, they’ll verify the validity of your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the state authorities.

If you’ve undergone a recent medical examination within the last 15 days and it hasn’t yet been updated on your CDL, it won’t be considered a violation. However, any cancellation of your CDL by the state, even due to administrative discrepancies like an unregistered medical examination, constitutes a severe violation. It’s advisable to carry a copy of your updated medical information at all times to avoid potential issues.

During the inspection, particular attention will be paid to lights, tires, cargo securement, brakes, and ABS lights. While having the required number of lights is essential, a single additional light being out won’t result in a violation. What matters most is the visibility of the lights. In case you’re cited for a light-related issue, documenting it with pictures can aid in challenging the citation through DATAQ.

In the event of any questionable citations, it’s advisable to take photographs for reference. When utilizing personal conveyance, remember that it cannot be utilized to expand the operational radius or extend on-duty time. Additionally, it shouldn’t serve the interests of the carrier, such as refueling or visiting a garage for repairs.

For those using Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), it’s mandatory to possess instructions for downloading information and be capable of displaying your time online.

Windshield defects are permissible within certain parameters; they cannot intersect or have two or more defects within a three-inch range.

In essence, ensure that your vehicle is in optimal condition, paying particular attention to the lights, as they remain a top violation category. Most lighting issues can be identified during a pre-trip inspection, emphasizing the importance of conducting thorough checks before hitting the road. In 2023, approximately 300,000 violations were attributed to lighting devices, underscoring the significance of this aspect in maintaining compliance within the trucking logistics industry.
